Please note that each check is good for only one organization.

Before requesting a criminal record check, first discuss with your employer which type they require. There are two types of criminal record checks in Winnipeg:

Police Information Check (PIC)

A PIC is for employment or volunteer services that do not involve children or vulnerable adults.

It will include convictions and sentences pursuant to federal legislation; summary convictions and sentences; convictions and sentences in respect of the Youth Criminal Justice Act; pending charges pursuant to federal legislation, where confirmed and authorized for release by the contributing police agency outstanding judicial orders pursuant to federal legislation; and finally charge and sentence of absolute discharges for one year from the date of discharge and conditional discharges for three years since the day on which the offender was ordered discharged on the conditions in the probation order pursuant to federal legislation.

A PIC will search local records of the applicant’s involvement with the Winnipeg Police Service (NICHE) as well as the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) and the RCMP national repository in Ottawa.

Police Vulnerable Sector Check

A vulnerable sector check is for employment or volunteer services that involve children or vulnerable adults.
In addition to everything included in a PIC, a vulnerable sector check is used to determine the possible existence of a criminal record and/or sexual offence conviction for which an individual has received a pardon.

According to RCMP policy, Triton cannot perform vulnerable sector checks. Further, the Winnipeg Police Service can only complete vulnerable sector checks for Winnipeg citizens. Residents in other parts of Manitoba will have to visit their local police station.

Here is a general guideline of what types of occupations may ask for a criminal record check and which kind.

This list isn’t meant to be exhaustive since different employers will ask for different criminal record checks, so be sure to confirm with them before making your request.
